TikTok Ads in Australia: Should You Be There Yet?

Honest assessment of the platform based on active Australian campaigns across product and service businesses.

The pitch for TikTok advertising writes itself: massive and growing audience, lower CPMs than Meta, algorithm that surfaces content to non-followers, high engagement rates. All of that is true. It is also an incomplete picture.

Here is an honest assessment based on what we are seeing in active Australian campaigns.

What the Australian TikTok audience actually looks like

The narrative that TikTok is only teenagers is outdated. In Australia, the platform now has meaningful penetration into the 25-44 demographic. That said, it skews significantly younger than Meta, and the content culture is more casual and entertainment-driven than either Facebook or Instagram.

If your customer is under 35 and uses social media actively, they are almost certainly on TikTok. If your customer is over 50, TikTok's Australian reach thins considerably.

Where TikTok ads are performing

Direct-to-consumer product businesses are seeing the strongest results, particularly in beauty, fashion, lifestyle, and impulse-purchase categories. The visual format and the platform's discovery algorithm are well-suited to products that can be demonstrated or shown in use.

Awareness plays for younger demographics. CPMs on TikTok are still meaningfully lower than Meta for equivalent audiences in most Australian categories. For brands building awareness without immediate purchase intent, the cost per impression is competitive.

Content amplification. Brands with genuine organic TikTok presence who then put spend behind their best content are seeing strong performance. The content aesthetic needs to be native to the platform — polished production values from a brand YouTube can actually underperform rough, authentic creator-style content.

Where TikTok ads are not performing

Local service businesses. The geographic targeting options for TikTok are less granular than Google or Meta in the Australian market. A Sunshine Coast tradesperson trying to reach Sunshine Coast homeowners has better tools available elsewhere.

High-consideration B2B. The platform's audience context is entertainment, not research. Decision-makers in procurement mode are not in TikTok's headspace.

Businesses without creative capacity. TikTok rewards content volume. A business that can produce two pieces of creative per month will struggle on a platform where the top performers are posting daily. If you cannot commit to the content requirement, the platform will not perform.

The honest recommendation

If your product or service fits a consumer-facing, visually demonstrable category, and you have the creative capacity to produce native-feeling content consistently, TikTok ads are worth testing. Start with a modest budget — $1,500 to $3,000 per month — and commit to learning the platform's creative conventions before scaling.

If you are a local service business, a B2B company, or a business without a dedicated content function, TikTok is not where your marketing budget should go right now. Meta and Google will give you better return for less creative overhead.

The platform is maturing. The advertising infrastructure is improving. It will be a more compelling recommendation for more business types within the next twelve to eighteen months. But for most Sunshine Coast businesses today, there are better places to start.
